From the Pete Lake Trailhead, the route follows the rushing Cooper River through a young forest, passing the Tired Creek Trail #1317 after 1.2 miles and the Pete Lake Tie Trail #1323.1 at 2.2 miles. The sign at the Tie Trail junction points toward Road No. 235, what is today called FR 4616. Primarily used by mountain bikers as a loop trail, this short 0.5-mile trail leads up to a forest road that leads back to the trailhead. Push onward and after 2.5 miles cross into the Alpine Lakes Wilderness and older forest, reaching the headwaters of the Cooper River and the lakeshore in no time.

Pass the Waptus Pass Trail #1329 on your way down to the lake or do some exploring of the numerous campsites along Pete Lake, each offering a slightly different expanse of water to enjoy. The best views are the easiest to reach; a rocky beach near the lake’s outlet.
