From the trailhead the Sourdough Mountain Trail begins to climb immediately, following a bootpounded trail scratched into the side of the mountain. Quickly leave the maples and alders behind as you work your way into firs and hemlocks. After crossing a sturdy bridge the trail rockets uphill, steeply ping-ponging up a long series of switchbacks. Not far beyond the switchbacks, cross into the North Cascades National Park and continue to push your way ever-upwards on slightly less daunting grades.
